Sunday Salon: Graphic Novels Week

Good morning! It’s a chilly 56 degrees outside. The sun is out and the coffeepot is perking but not as fast as I want it to.

Reading

My reading is still pretty slow going. I probably read two more pages in The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard. I decided not to finish a review copy that I was reading. It was slow going and the writing was pretty repetitive. I did end up re-reading Hereville 2 by Barry Duetsch, another graphic novel that I need to review.

I’m still trying to find a book that I can get lost in. I have three that I’m considering: The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson, a book that’s showing up on best of 2012 lists; The Half-Made World by Felix Gilman, and The Illumination by Kevin Brockmeier.

Blogging

I posted a measly three posts last week. Some days I felt like I had something to say while other days my life was way too busy to even think. With studying, parent-teacher conferences, housekeeping, and everything else going on, I couldn’t sit down long enough to write a post. I have about five graphic novels that I need to review, so maybe this week will be Graphic Novels Week. I’ll review a new graphic novel every day of the week.

Events

Next month is the last book club discussion for the Chunky Book Club. We’re reading Julie Orrinhger’s The Invisible Bridge. Set in several countries, it’s the story of three brothers whose lives have been affected by war. I read Orringer’s first book a collection of short stories so I can’t wait to read this. The discussion post will go up around December 7th and anyone can join. I hope you consider it.

Now I’m off. My coffee is getting cold. What are you reading today?

    I’ve just finished reading The Silence of Mercy Bleu and now I’m reading The Candidate which is a political thriller sent to me by the author. Enjoy your Sunday, and your coffee 🙂

  3. I’m excited to hear about the graphic novels you’re reading! I hope my library will have some of them — their selection isn’t great, so a lot of graphic novel reviews these days just make me sad.

  4. I hope you find something that grabs you soon 🙂 I read The Age of Miracles and liked it quite a lot. I recently read The Art Forger and I couldn’t put it down, maybe that’s one you could look for? 🙂

    The Invisible Bridge sounds great. I love chunky books!

  5. It’s 30 degrees where I’m at right now! I miss summer. 😦

    I’m not as busy as you, but NaNo has been a struggle for me this year. Last year I just plugged away at the same pace every day, and this year I write 3k words one day and 1500 another. It is what it is, I guess.

  6. I was in a reading rut too so yesterday and today I read Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan and Snarked by Roger Langridge. They were the perfect cure (I hope). I’ll be starting Tuck Everlasting before bed tonight. Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic week!

  7. My reading has been really slow as well, and I am still about 1/3 of the way through The Passage. I am hoping to get to it today, and knock it out, and then finish the other book that I am in the middle of, whose title escapes me now. I need to buckle down and get serious about this!!
